1. 研究目的与意义
Nathaniel Hawthorne is a great romantic novelist in America in the nineteenth century. His works belong to romanticism or, more specifically, dark romanticism, cautionary tales that suggest that guilty, sin, and evil are the most inherent natural qualities of humanity. Many of his works are inspired by Puritan New England, combining historical romance loaded with symbolism and deep psychological themes, bordering on surrealism. His depictions of the past are a version of historical fiction used only as a vehicle to express common themes of ancestral sin, guilt and retribution. His later writings also reflect his negative view of the Transcendentalism movement. In his novels, Hawthorne always gives symbolic meanings to some objective things to express his true understanding of the world. He also tries his best to show the hiding meaning through the symbols in his novels. So, if we want to deeply understand Hawthorne#8217;s writing, it is necessary for us to make a study of symbols and symbolism in his novels. The Scarlet Letter is Hawthorne#8217;s masterpiece, which makes him world-famous, and it is also one of the most remarkable works in American literature. It tells the story of Hester Prynne, who conceives a daughter through an affair and struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity which sets in 17th-century Puritan Boston, Massachusetts during the years 1642 to 1649. Through the book, Hawthorne explores themes of legalism, sin, and guilt. It is not so easy for us to understand the true meaning of Hawthorne#8217;s works. So, it is necessary for us to make an in-depth study of The Scarlet Letter and it will help us really see what the author is about.
