Jane Austen was a famous English novelist in the nineteenth century and she was one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary as well as her acclaimed plots have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, British women were low in status. They were not independent in respect of economy and politics. What''''''''''''''''s more, their right to receive education was limited. Compared with men, women were considered to be of lower intelligence naturally. And most of women at that time seemed to admit the concept. They did not have self-awareness of their attached position. While Jane Austen did not echo the popular ideas at that time. Austen lived her entire life as part of a close-knit family located on the lower fringes of the English landed gentry. She tended to be a liberal feminist and she was a prophet of female consciousness. It was the consciousness that made her express a lot about feminism in her works. She focused on the description of characteristics of women who were equal to men just as a #8216;person#8217;. Jane Austen had contributed a lot to the rational feminism movement of the Enlightenment.

Sense and Sensibility was Jane Austen''''''''s first published novel. It portrays the life and loves of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. The novel follows the young ladies to their new home, a meager cottage on a distant relative''''''''''''''''s property, where they experience love, romance and heartbreak. The novel reflects a lot of standpoint of feminine.

The paper will mainly discuss feminism in Sense and Sensibility by reading the novel in details and associating it with the social background and the author''''''''s experiences. It will analyze feminist consciousness of the heroines through dissecting emotional experiences of Elinor and Marianne.

Many scholars have studied Jane Austen''''''''''''''''s works from different perspectives, such as the theme, the characteristics, view of marriage and also feminism.

By analyzing vision of love in Sense and Sensibility, Zuo Jing held the view that Jane Austen criticized those people who were covered with enthusiasm but were cold inside. She also criticized cheap emotion and approved of rational view of love. She opposed lack of rational thinking and she thought it was unwise to blindly chase love.

Tang Jingchun held the view that the ideas Jane Austen conveyed in the novel are similar to liberal feminism. From Jane Austen''''''''''''''''s crying for liberal feminism to postmodern feminism, feminism keeps going forward though it has met a lot of difficulties. The final goal is just as what Simone De Beauvior said, #8216;Everything is based on the fact that men and women can try to build a world which is free and profit most from it.
