1. 研究目的与意义

The purpose of my study isto analyze the conflicts in Invisible Man written by Ralph Ellison. As a classic work which tells the story of a youngblack man who was suffering from racial discrimination in a white-dominatedsociety and constantly searching for national culture and self-identity, Invisible Man is called 'an epicof modern African American life'. In the novel, I am interested in the conflicts between the black youth anddifferent people when the young man searched for himself. For example, the racialconflicts between the black youth and the White people when he resists theoppression of the White people will be a part of my study. At the same time, theanalysis of the political conflicts between Brotherhood and the black youth andthe conflicts between Dr. Bledsoe and the black youth will also consist of mystudy.

The reason why I do thestudy can be divided into two parts. First, this novel has a uniquesignificance for American black culture. Racial problem remains unsolved becauseit’s a long progress for Black People to struggle for equal status. SinceColumbus discovered the North America, Black people had lived in darkness untilthe American Civil War ended. After that, Black people started fighting forequal status instead of freedom. Even now, people from different races stillneed a long time to get along with each other to understand each other and reachthe level of equality of all races. Second, the warm atmosphere at the beginning and the conflicts that run through the story have shockedme. It’s no doubt that Invisible Man is a thought-provoking novel, and I hope I can share my point of view of thisnovel.

The significance of thisresearch lies in exploring the content of the novel from the perspective ofconflict and promoting the research of InvisibleMan in China and abroad.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

I will analyze the conflicts in Invisible Man. The paper will be divided into 3 parts. First, therewill be a brief introduction of Ralph Ellison’s life and works, his influenceon American literature and the content of the novel. Second, I will analysesthe racial conflicts and their causes, the political conflicts and their causesand the conflicts of interest and their causes in the novel. Last is the conclusionof the paper.

The problem I want to solvethrough this paper is how to analyze the racial problems in America with themethod of influence study. In the progress of solving the first problem, I willstudy the literary influence of American nationalities, and confirm the influenceon the conflicts in the novel through specific text analysis, and find thespiritual relationship between the writer and the work. The purpose of this researchmethod is to find out the law of the conflicts in the novel influenced by theoutside world, as well as its causes, conditions and influences.

3. 国内外研究现状

In 1993, scholars in the Chinese literary fieldbegan to do research on Ellison and his works. Although there have been dabblesin black literature before, the results of research are very few. In the past20 years, scholars in the Chinese literary field have written a summary of Ellison''sworks which had been published in his life. And then they put the emphasis ofthe research on the theme of his works, writing techniques and other articles whichhave targeted research. Among these researches, there are many scholars who explorefrom the theme of Ellison’s Invisible Man to the cultural conflictsconsider the symbolic meaning of this novel from the perspective of aesthetics. Before the 1990s, there were only a handful ofstudies of Ellison done by scholars in Chinese literature field. In the 1990s,the research direction of Chinese scholars developed from the preliminarysummary of African-American literature in the 1980s to the study of individualAfrican-American writers.

Wei Yujie amp; Zhao Yali (1994) translated a Ralph,a famous black American writer in the Times Literature supplement. Theyintroduced the life of Ralph Ellison, a famous American black writer, and hisworks published before his death from the macro level for the first time, whichhas made Chinese scholars have a preliminary understanding of Ellison’sliterary achievements. Since the 21st century, studies on Ellison’s works havegradually increased, and Chinese scholars have analyzed and explored hismasterpiece Invisible Man from multiple perspectives and layers, makingup the research gap of the last century.

However, the comments on Ralph Ellison in foreigncountry focus on the following aspects. First, they do study on Ellison’s ownlife. Rafferty Terrence (1999)wrote a paper Ralph Ellison''s unfinished business. He profiled the successof first novel entitle Invisible Man, the questions on Ellison''s failureto finish his second novel Juneteenth before his death, the biographicaland educational background of Ellison, and his admiration for American speech. Second, they study his work from a literary point of view. LiebermanJennifer L. (2015) focus on novelist Ralph Ellison’s relevance of hissupposedly indirect illustrations of technology in allowing readers to betterunderstand both his art and his politics. They discussed include Ellison''sinterpretations of humanism and technological optimism, how he draws humanistconclusions from technological imagery, citing the novel Invisible Man as an example, and how he weakens the popular model of equating technologicaldevelopment with freedom. There are more other perspectivesand richer contents of overseas researches on Ellison.
